Directions for Writing Summaries with the “Real Person” or “Brand Name” Assignment:
1.Create a Word Document. You will be typing your summaries and turning them in the “R” drive network
folder.
2.Next, read through the circled “names” on your class copy sheet.
3.Choose four “names” from these columns that interest you.
4.In your document, type each of the “names” that you have chosen. List each name in a different section of your paper (see the example).
5.You are going to express your opinion as to whether or not the “name” you have written is a real person or a brand name only. Type your guess next to the name, after the number on your paper. (Write the words “real person” or “brand name” OR abbreviate).
6.Now, repeat step 5 with all four “names” that you have chosen.
7.Once you have completed this task, go back to the first section and read the article linked for this “name” on
the foodtimeline.org website.
8.After reading the article, it is time to write a summary. Use the sentence frames reviewed in class to
complete this task. Remember not to number your sentences as you write your paragraph.
9.Start with the first sentence frame; fill in the areas left blank with the information for your “name”.
10.Go to sentence frame number 2 and do the same.
11.Next complete sentence frame number 3.
12.Sentence frames 4 and 5 allow you more flexibility in answering the question. As you complete this part of
your summary, remember to make them complete and easy to understand sentences.
13.Repeat this process for the 4 “names” that you have chosen.
**If you finish early you may create additional summaries using your own writing structure, visit the “portion distortion” website, or the take the challenge on the “Don’t Gross Out the World” site (both of these sites are linked from the FACS links page of my network folder).

Real or Brand Name Assignment
1. Betty Crocker
I imagined that Betty Crocker was a real person. I thought this because there is a picture of Betty on the Betty Crocker Cookbook. The article that I read about Betty Crocker states that Betty was created in the U.S.A. in 1921. I learned that Betty Crocker had her own radio show. I also learned that Betty has become younger over the years. The first portrait, from 1936, shows a much older woman. I believe that they portrayed her as being older, so that people back then would trust her and think of their own grandmother.
2. Elsie the Cow
I believed that Elsie the Cow was a brand name. I thought this because it does not sound like a real name for a cow.
